Lamjung is one of the districts of Gandaki zone, 170 kilometer far from Kathmandu. This district is occupied 40 percent land by high mountains above 2000 meter and 60 percent land is hilly and high hilly mountain. Lamjung is a very rich district in terms of natural resources there are two mega hydro electric projects founded in the famous river Marsyangdi.This district’s northern and western part is covered by Annapurna Conservation Area Project.
Lamjung has lot of potential of tourism trade; this place is known as a gate way of world famous Annapurna circuit trek that begins from Besisahar the district head quarter of Lamjung. There are many other small trekking trails, honey hunter region and village tourism promotion program that run by under coordination of civil society and Nepal tourism board.
Most of the inhabitants are Gurung and Ghale in upper parts and Kshetri Brahmin, Newar lives in southern lowland area. The main occupation of Lamjung people have farming, animal husbandry, tourism, British and Indian Gurkha army, government service and new youngster go to work abroad. There are lots of potential of development in Lamjung, however most of the poor villagers and community are marginalized. The Hands for Help Nepal aims to support these communities to uplift their life standard from this stage. Currently we have been carrying out our volunteer program in these areas.
Besisahar
Besisahar is a district head quarter of Lamjung there are many government offices with different division. This is a mini city around 12000 thousands people, and transport system is well set up every other hour public transport micro bus, mini bus and micro bus head to Kathmandu, Pokhara and other major cities. For accommodation and food it has good facility. For communication there are internet, telephone and postal service available. All our placements for Lamjung head through this city it is a transit point for meeting to other volunteer.
Also we based some program in Besisahar for Health and First aid Program, Monastery Teaching and English Teaching program. Puma
Puma is a small village, 20 households, lies in north of Besisahar on the top of hill about 1500mt altitude. There is a seasonal muddy road connects to Besisahar and northern villages, takes 1:30 hours on the jeep. Getting puma on foot it takes 3 to 4 hours up hill. Most of the people from Puma are Gurung, kami and Damai. This village is electrified and web and CDMA phone access. This village is naturally beautiful where from you can view Lamjung himal, Annapurna ranges, tranquil scene of landscape and beautiful rivers and gorges. Moreover this place has unique Gurung culture, Language and festivals.
Volunteer will work in the primary school where all kids come from Puma village; almost all of them are form poor and middle class family. There are 5 classes, grade1 to 5, about 115 kids in total. We have been placing volunteer since 2004 in teaching English subjects and extra curricular activities. Some students whom we sponsor also go to same school.
Apart from teaching, volunteer may take a part in working with local women group which is actively involved in micro enterprising and village development. They have played a major role to electrify their village and currently playing a major role in building green road. We have four host families in Puma who have already served twenties of volunteers. |
